Lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] is a spherical lipid particle similar to low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Lp(a) differs from LDL by containing an additional glycoprotein, apolipoprotein(a) [apo(a)]. Numerous studies beginning in the 1970s have reported an association of Lp(a) with coronary heart disease (CHD). Lipoprotein (a) levels are influenced by genetic factors and vary with ethnic population.
